The entity that is now known as the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc. was founded in 1983 by Rev. Ted and Martha Knies in Pharr, TX. The Valley had just been hit with a devastating freeze and Rev. and Mrs. Knies wanted to help the families affected by this event. At that time, it was a food pantry called the Pharr Area Food Pantry and directly served individuals in Pharr and the surrounding areas.
In 1986, the Pharr Area Food Pantry incorporated to become the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc. This way it could serve as a clearinghouse for smaller food pantries and on-site feeding organizations. The Food Bank RGV is a champion to those organizations who focus on making food accessible to the Valley including supporting child feeding sites at Boys and Girls Clubs through the Kids Cafe Programs, Operation Kid Pack and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Making food accessible for seniors and postpartum women and children is also a priority through the CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program).
Today, the Food Bank RGV has grown to become the 36th largest food bank in terms of distribution in the nation and the 5th largest in the state of Texas. We are proudly affiliated with the national Feeding America (formerly America's Second Harvest) and the Texas Food Bank Network.
As of the end of Fiscal Year 2007, the Food Bank RGV distributed over 18.7 million pounds of non-perishable and frozen product, and fresh produce. Total number of agencies for FY 2007 were over 200.
The Food Bank RGV also has other programs like the Texas Second Chance Program that enables Lopez State Prison low-risk trustees to earn valuable job skills and experience while saving on labor costs (an estimated $200,000 in 2007). Trustees pick and palletize food orders for Food Bank RGV agencies. Other programs include Kids Cafes, Commodity Food Supplemental Programs, Operation Kid Pack, School Tools, Healthy Living and Outreach Programs.
We currently serve the counties of Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy. In addition, the Food Bank RGV has a Subsidiary Distribution Organization (SDO) in the South Texas Food Bank of Laredo that directly serves seven additional counties.
